Violent Crimes in Phoenix

Drive by Shooting

Sadly drive by shootings rarely go well for the person being shot at. According to the Phoenix police, a victim of a recent drive by shooting has passed away.

The victim was later identified as twenty-five year old, Kyle Begley. The reports said that the young man was shot around 2:30 p.m. and it was near Oraibi Drive. Oraibi is a quiet little neighborhood near the 7th Avenue and the Loop 101.

According to the police, Begley had to be taken to the local hospital due to his “extremely critical” condition. Sadly he later was pronounced dead at the local hospital.

Police said Begley was seen having a conversation with another man in the driveway of his home. The suspect got into his vehicle, then fired a shot at Begley and drove away from the area.

Neighbor, Dawn Woolworth’s Statement:

All of a sudden, I heard a loud pop and I’m like, what is that?  I’ve lived in this place for 31 years and nothing ever happens here.

A number of police units responded to the scene, along with the Arizona Humane Society. Officers on the scene said they asked for assistance from animal control because they were having trouble with one or more dogs at the victim’s residence.

Police have been asking neighbors for surveillance video.

Police said the suspect was in an older model sedan. The vehicle was silver and possibly a Honda.

The investigation is ongoing.

Children Abused in Apartment

Sometimes apartment’s get a bad rap. Most people think that apartments are gross and filthy and in some cases, like this one they’re right. Sadly two children under three years old were found living in an apartment which had mold, feces, rotting food and bugs in it. This was in Glendale.

The Glendale police reported that on September 29th they arrived on a call to an apartment near 55th Avenue and Camelback Road. The manager of the apartment’s saw a seventeen month old little girl in a playpen which was covered in flies. How heartbreaking for that poor baby that has no defense for it’s self.

The police say that the home was horrible. It smelled like “decomposing body” inside. They also found the little girl and her two and a half year old brother.

The officers found black mold in the apartment as well as nasty standing water on the floor. How gross is that? Officers also saw rotting food, bugs, and both of the children were covered in dirt.

According to the police, the little boy had feces on both sides of his little face. He also had his name written on his forearm with a marker. Poor little guy.

Luckily, the Arizona Department of Child Safety removed the children from the home. They took them to the local hospital to be evaluated.

The father, twenty-five year old, George Philip Riefler told the police that his apartment had been that way for around three months. He told the police that he had been depressed and felt overwhelmed lately. Well yea, of course is your house is nasty like that you’re going to be depressed and definitely over whelmed.

The young father was arrested on two counts of child abuse.

Dispensary Causes Suspicion

Chandler’s First Medical Marijuana Dispensary

The United States is always progressing and one of the biggest conflicts is the marijuana debate. Local news was allowed to go visit the dispensary for an exclusive look inside of Chandler’s first dispensary.

According to news reports, this new facility is in place of the old Last Chance Saloon on the Arizona Avenue and Hunt Highway.

On Friday The Herbal Wellness Center will officially open. Patients were anxiously awaiting in line for the soft opening the Wednesday before the Friday opening.

In 2013 the company started their first venture into the Marijuana business. Their first location was in Phoenix.

Chandler Dispensary Opens

The officials in Chandler had tried to fight the dispensary’s opening at first, however they worked hard to come to an agreement to work out all the problems they came up with at first.

Joshua Huntington’s Statement who is the Assistant Manager at Herbal Wellness Center:

We are one of the first state of the art dispensaries in this area especially in Chandler all-around about 25 surrounding miles people are coming from all over.

The manager say that you can look at the items that they have available but you can’t buy them until the opening due to legal requirements. Who ever has an actual medical marijuana card can go ahead and get any kind of bud or pot potion that they would like.

Managers of the dispensaries say that the South Chandler location just makes sense.

According to studies, there are about 4,000 medical marijuana card holders in Chandler. That seems like a high number but that number just continues to grow statewide.

Chandler Medical Marijuana Dispensary Opens

Chandler has opened it’s very first medical marijuana dispensary. It’s debut had quite the…welcoming committee.

According to the reports, The Herbal Wellness Center was giving away free pot. They claim up to 1/8 of an ounce of marijuana. They gave a little extra as a thank you gift to every patient that made a purchase. They claimed it was part of the company’s Grand Opening celebration. Of course, the promotion worked very well. Claims have said that there has been a steady stream of medical marijuana card holders that went into the clinic.

Wellness Center Gives Away Free Pot

The owner of The Herbal Wellness Center, Rami Sweis said that he definitley saw the need to having a center in the area of the Southeast Valley. His facility is located near Arizona Avenue near Hunt Highway.

Sweis is expecting a great success, which so far it’s proven to be one. As time goes on he expects even more people to register for the medical marijuana card. He hopes his Center is convenient for the residents.

Arizona is one of the twenty-three states in the United States that actually have medical marijuana programs. It’s a bit of an “unorthodox” business, but it’s helps a lot of people. While, the businesses do provide help, marijuana is still prohibited under Federal law. Which makes it a hard honest business to get into.

It’s a Schedule I substance and distributing is of course a federal offense, even though their President has urged the federal prosecutors to not prosecute anyone who is selling medical marijuana in a state that allows it.

Business

Which it makes the business start up even harder. Because a lot of banks actually refuse to work with the dispensaries because they fear a federal crackdown, which they should. The dispensaries do not accept credit cards for this reason so they can only do the transactions in cash only. Which makes it hard on some of their customers. A lot of people do not carry cash on them any more. It’s so much easier to keep a debit or credit card on hand.

The Herbal Wellness Center has a great set up and tries to be as secure as possible. They have security guards at the door for extra protection. There’s also a number of security cameras which covers almost every corner of the facility.

They have great hopes for the facilities at Chandler and the other one which is located at 40th Avenue and Indian School which is in Phoenix.

The center hopes to employee around two hundred people before the end of the year.  This place is helping people and creating jobs, what else could you want from a brand new business?

Homicide Cases Near Phoenix

Foul Play Homicide Case

Horseplay turned to homicide charges when a pedestrian was killed Thursday night after being pushed into the road and hit by a vehicle, Phoenix police said.

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. near Dunlap and 19th avenues, according to Sgt. Alan Pfohl with the Phoenix Police Department.

Pfohl said 23-year-old Terrance Veale was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After further investigation, officials said they determined Veale and Tyrone David Turner were on the sidewalk engaging in horseplay.

Turner, 26, told police he pushed Veale, Pfohl said. Veale stumbled into the road and was hit by a vehicle.

Turner was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide.

No other details were immediately available. The investigation is ongoing

Drive By Shooting

Sadly, two teen boys were shot recently in a drive by shooting in West Phoenix.

According to the reports, the Police and firefighters were called to an address near 67th Avenue and Baseline Road. This happened around 1:45 p.m. for a report of a possible drive by shooting.

The police said that there were witnesses who reported seeing two groups in a drug deal when the shots were filed. One of the teens who was shot has sadly died at the scene of the incident.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department spokesman, the other teen also has wounds. The teen has wounds to his arms and legs and is more stable. He has also been taken to an area hospital.

Officers located a suspect vehicle fleeing the scene. The police were able to detain four people who they think are involved in the incident.

Criminal Defense Cases

If you have been charged with murder, the attorney you choose to defend you will likely be one of the most important decisions you ever make. Obtaining a strong defense could be the difference between freedom and a life behind bars.

At the Phoenix based Offices of Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC, you will find the experienced, dedicated and highly skilled trial attorneys you need to protect your rights. Each of our attorneys made a conscious decision to become a criminal defense lawyer. We could have chosen any other field of law, but defending the freedom and liberty of people who are facing the possibility of incarceration was our first choice. We believe strongly that skilled and passionate defense attorneys can make a difference in the lives of their clients. We go into every case feeling that we can make that difference.

Hiring the Right Homicide Lawyer in Phoenix

Having a skilled homicide defense attorney is important in any criminal case, but it is even more critical in a murder case. To properly defend a client against a murder charge, a defense lawyer must be prepared to effectively challenge the prosecution’s evidence. To do so, a Phoenix Murder Defense Attorney must be prepared to effectively cross-examine the prosecution’s witnesses, including any expert witnesses.

Expert Witnesses

In some cases, a Phoenix Homicide Defense Attorney may need to use expert witnesses on behalf of the defendant to challenge forensic evidence, ballistics evidence and other scientific evidence presented by the prosecution. We are prepared to do so and have worked with expert witnesses in the past to provide a vigorous defense on our clients’ behalf.

In addition to fighting your charges at trial (or seeking a case dismissal for lack of probable cause), we can also negotiate with the prosecution to seek a favorable plea agreement. A plea agreement might involve a plea to a lesser offense or an agreement on sentencing that will significantly reduce the penalties you face.

Homicide Defense Strategy

We will take the time to talk to witnesses, investigate what really happened in your case, understand what evidence is in the prosecution’s possession, look for holes in the prosecution’s case, and determine if the police violated your constitutional rights or made other critical errors that can be used to your advantage.

We are committed to raising a strong and comprehensive defense on your behalf. Depending on the facts of your case, the following defenses and strategies may be helpful:

  • Self-Defense
  • Insanity
  • Mistaken Identity
  • Suppression of Evidence
  • Challenging DNA, Fingerprint Evidence and other Forensic Evidence
  • Challenging Ballistics Evidence (Relating to Firearms and Bullets)
  • Challenging the Reliability of an Eyewitness
  • Challenging Whether the Evidence Sustains a Murder Conviction
  • Negotiation with the Prosecution to Determine if a Plea Agreement Could

Significantly Minimize the Charges or Penalties you Face

We have defended clients against murder charges and other felony violent crimes. You can be confident that you will have a highly skilled and dedicated defense lawyer who will advise you of your rights, help explain the process and work diligently to seek the best possible outcome on your behalf.

Felony Robbery Case

Linked Armed Robbery

Several armed robberies have taken place over the last couple months in Mesa, Chandler, and Phoenix. Police think that maybe the robbery suspect that was recently caught in Mesa could be the link between those in Mesa, Chandler, and Phoenix.

According to the Mesa police report, on January 9th forty-nine year old Ronald Ruben Rodriguez went into a sandwich shop near the Alma School and Baseline Roads. He then ordered a ham and turkey sandwich.

Once he got to the cash register Rodriguez reportedly pulled a handgun on the employee then robbed the store and left the area.

Unfortunately the police officers weren’t able to find Rodriguez but they did identify him through the store surveillance video. Police think that Rodriguez has been involved in sandwich shop armed robberies in Chandler, Phoenix, and one other Mesa location. They suspect he might also be involved in a Phoenix bank robbery.

Police say that Rodriguez is a convicted felon who has already spent eleven years of his life in a federal prison. For what? Armed robbery of course.

He is now being charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

Business Owner Takes on Armed Robber

Thankfully one business owner was prepared for anything on a Friday afternoon when two armed robbers tried to rob his business.

According to the Phoenix Police, the incident happened just before three in the evening. They had to respond to an armed robbery at a Coins shop near Tatum and Greenway. The police said that the suspects were a man and woman. When the would be robbery suspects walked into the shop the owner shot the male suspect and held the pair of them at gunpoint until the officers arrived. Good for them, maybe more robbery suspects will get scared and take note and stop with the constant robberies in Phoenix.

The male suspect had to be taken to the hospital for his non life threatening injuries. The woman was later identified as twenty-eight year old, Brittany Reid. She was booked and was charged for one count of armed robbery.
