Drug Findings in Phoenix

Drug Houses Found in Bust

Three suspected drug houses were raided and 10 people were arrested in a big drug sweep in El Mirage Wednesday morning.

El Mirage police, along with SWAT teams from DPS and MCSO served search warrants at three homes in the area.

Two homes were next door to each other; a third home was right across the street.

DPS believes the homes were sites of alleged gang, drug and prostitution activities.

“Especially in a smaller community, any time you can shut down three drug houses is phenomenal,” said one DPS detective. “It’s a huge impact in the community.”

Drug Informant

With the help of someone she didn’t know was an informant, records state, Acosta-Quintana transported the supplies to men whose job entails hiding in the desert for weeks on end.

She’s part of a group of 10 U.S. citizens and one Mexican national accused by the feds of running a sophisticated resupply operation for some of the “vast network” of cartel scouts.

In a complaint (below) and indictment made public last month, an assistant Arizona U.S. Attorney describes in detail how people employed by drug cartels allegedly brought food, fuel, and other supplies from Phoenix to the scouts.

The scouts’ job, in turn, was to guide marijuana smugglers through the Tohono O’odham Nation and into Arizona, making sure they stayed far away from law-enforcement officials.

Marijuana Bust

The February 28 federal indictment charges all 11 with a single count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana.

Records don’t state whether the suspects are Arizona residents or members of the Tohono O’odham tribe, but implies they mostly hail from metro Phoenix or the reservation.

The Native American reservation in southern Arizona, which shares a roughly 70-mile border with Mexico, has been a focal point in the new Trump administration immigration plan.

The tribe strongly opposes the construction of a border wall on its land. But its international border, which is marked in some places by barbed-wire fence or nothing at all, has for years been a sieve for smugglers.

Homeland Security Investigations began its probe of the group in October 2015, after a confidential source outlined much of the operation.

The bust, while noteworthy, may barely make a dent in the overall scout problem. Authorities occasionally target the scouts, like in the raid of a desert area near Arizona City last June.

However, going after the people who help the scouts has been difficult. One obstacle is that it’s not illegal to drive around with supplies or drop them off somewhere.

Drug Trafficking Case

The 15-page complaint in the case, which was filed in January and unsealed late last month, outlines in detail the feds’ case against the alleged conspirators.

Drug-trafficking organizations “utilize a vast network of scouts and scout helpers” to get the marijuana through the reservation, the complaint states.

Scouts are spread out all across what’s known as the “west desert corridor,” which runs roughly from State Route 286 to Yuma, and from the Mexican border to Interstate 8, where vehicles can pick up the pot loads.

Equipped with cell phones, binoculars, and digitally encrypted walkie-talkies, they take positions in hills and rocky outcrops, relaying information to load drivers and backpackers on foot.

For each group of smugglers that reaches their destination successfully, the scouts will be typically paid $500 to $1,000 apiece.

Secret Drugs

They’re hired to work through a “smuggling cycle” of eight to 12 weeks, but take vacations on Easter, Christmas, and Three Kings Day.

Within a group of scouts, one or more people will have specialized tasks, from scoping the area with binoculars to charging radios and cellphones to cooking.

The scouts need occasional drops of food, clothes, camping equipment, and other provisions in order to conduct their mission “without interruptions.”

That’s where the resupply personnel come in. They’re usually people who are familiar with the area because they live nearby.

The cartel gives “resupply members” vehicles, which these members sometimes re-title in their names, plus money to buy the supplies.

The complaint details a few dozen of the resupply operations.

The feds charge that on October 7, 2015, Maria Roxanna “Roxy” Acosta-Quintana was involved in one of them.

Feds Get Involved

They say she instructed the confidential source to drive an SUV to Acosta-Quintana’s mother’s house in Phoenix to Llanteria Michoacano’s #2, a tire shop at 44th Avenue and Indian School Road.

At the house, the informant received the keys to the SUV, which was pre-packed with six large, black trash bags full of supplies. Acosta-Quintana’s sedan was also packed with six bags of supplies.

Acosta-Quintana led her helper-informant to the tire shop, where a pickup truck was waiting. They loaded all 12 supply bags plus two spare tires into the truck.

The informant then hopped in the pickup and told the driver, an unidentified man, how to get to Arizona City near the Tohono nation.

Once at the intersection of Sunland Gin and Green Reservoir roads, “10 Hispanic males dressed in camouflage clothing came out from behind some bushes and were given the Ford pickup,” the complaint states.

Acosta-Quintana and the informant then returned to Phoenix.

 Drug Informant

In another example, the informant told officials how bags of supplies were taken directly to scouts working in the Sheridan Mountain Foothills, Castle Mountains, and Cimarron Mountains near Federal Route 34 on the reservation. In that same operation, the helpers took bags to the Tohono villages of Hikiwan and Kaka.

Resupply members often used the Walmart at 51st Avenue and Indian School Road to pick up supplies and exchange vehicles.

Border Patrol

Another resupply member, Fawn Eveningstar Manuel, was stopped in January 2016 by the U.S. Border Patrol. During the stop, Manuel admitted that she was taking bags of supplies in her SUV to Hikiwan “to assist with illegal alien smuggling occurring in the village of Hikiwan.”

As the investigation progressed, the feds tracked certain resupply vehicles to desert locations. In one such instance in January 2016, they found and arrested nine suspected smugglers with 473 pounds of marijuana.

Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, declined comment on the case.

The indicted U.S. citizens are:

• Maria Roxanna Acosta-Quintana

• Angelica Alvarado

• Nicole Havier

• Dora Carreras

• Fawn Eveningstar Manuel

• Annai Arlene Hernandez

• Jesus Gilberto Parra-Acosta

• Jackie Ann Garcia

• Antonio Pasqual Aguilar-Sanchez

• Lawrence Juan Jr.

• Andrew Ortega

Ruben Villegas-Acosta of Mexico was also indicted.

Phoenix Shooting And Suspect Searches

Phoenix Police Searching for Shooting Suspect

When you’re in a relationship you’ll do anything for your new lover, but does that really include being involved in a shooting? Nope. Not in my book anyways.

Police are now searching for a suspect who supposedly shot his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend. Little crazy. This happened at a north Phoenix apartment complex.

The Phoenix police say that  the shooting happened close to 11th Street and Dunlap around 3:30 in the early morning. The woman and her new boyfriend were inside of an apartment when the woman’s ex-boyfriend entered the apartment and shot the new boyfriend twice.

Police aren’t sure if there was a fight before the shooting or what but apparently the area is one that has a history of violence.

Irene Halleckson’s Statement:

I hear them all the time, so I just don’t say anything anymore. Until I heard her scream, then I knew something bad happened.

The victim is now going to face surgery for his life threatening injuries.

Apartment Shooting

Phoenix has been booming, literally from the sounds of the many shootings in the area. Now the Phoenix Police are investigating the most recent shooting of a man who was found dead inside of an apartment.

Officer Alan Pfohl said that the suspect had left the area before the authorities had gotten to the scene. The got the call about a shooting on Wednesday morning.

Officer Pfohl said that the detectives are going to conduct interviews to hopefully piece together what happened, however early “indications” lead them to believe that drug activity may be part of the issue here.

The reports say that the shooting happened in an apartment complex near South 48th Street and East Elliot Road.

Stolen Car Leads to Shooting

According to police a Buckeye home invasion suspect was shot and then had to be taken into custody. This was after a car chase happened after a stolen car was involved. The chase ended near Wickenburg.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect actually led the officers on a car chase towards Wickenburg after a home invasion in Buckeye.

The incident started around 7 o’clock in the morning. Not the smartest time since that’s when daylight hits.

Luckily the car had OnStar which assisted in the chase. It was able to track and disable the stolen SUV.

Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez Statement:

This was something that we needed to use immediately to get this vehicle disabled, and we were able to do it successfully.
The suspect was reportedly involved in a gunfight which lead to the suspect being shot and wounded by the sheriff’s deputies. The suspect was then taken into custody.

Kenneth’s Statement:

The first thing I heard were the sirens, and there were a lot of them. My brother was right out here chopping weeds, and he said he heard five or six shots. He said he couldn’t count them. They came so fast.

Alice’s Statement:

One of the sheriff’s cars came by real fast and he rolled his window down and hollered at me to get inside, get inside now! So I knew something was going down.

Phoenix Criminal Threats Lawyer

Criminal Defense Cases

Formerly referred to as terroristic threats, the crime of criminal threats may be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony offense, depending on case specifics. A criminal threat occurs when an individual threatens to kill or injure another person and that person has a reasonably sustained fear for his or her safety, or the safety of his or her immediate family. A defendant may potentially be convicted of making criminal threats even if he or she did not intend to carry out the threat, provided that the alleged victim had a reasonable basis to fear for his or her safety.

Arrest in Phoenix for Criminal Threats

If you have been arrested for making a criminal threat, it is critical that you protect your rights by retaining an experienced criminal defense attorney. For a vigorous defense, contact the Law Offices of Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC immediately.

Arizona prosecutors have considerable discretion to charge criminal threats offenses as a misdemeanor or a felony. If you are convicted of a misdemeanor criminal threat, harassment or stalking offense, you could face up to one year in county jail. If you are convicted of a felony criminal threats offense, you could face up to four years in state prison. You could face significantly greater penalties if you used a firearm or other dangerous weapon while making criminal threats.

Types of Criminal Threats

A Criminal Threat is a strike offense, which means that you could face significantly enhanced penalties if you are convicted of a future felony. Even a nonviolent felony could result in twice the prison sentence if you have a prior strike offense. A third strike could result in a prison sentence of 25 years to life.

Criminal Threats Defensive Strategy

There are many ways that our skilled Phoenix Defense Attorneys can raise a strong defense on your behalf. First, we will examine the facts of the case to determine if the prosecution has enough evidence to obtain a conviction. In particular, we will look at any evidence of the alleged communication. Does the prosecution have copies of an email or voicemail? If the state has nothing more than a he-said-she said case, the prosecution will have a tougher time proving its case.

Taking Your Criminal Threats Case to Trial

Even if the prosecution has evidence of the alleged communication, we will examine the nature of the communication. Was the threat a serious one? In other words, did the alleged victim actually fear for his or her safety and was he or she reasonable to have such fear? The prosecution does not have to prove that you intended to carry out the threat, or even that you had the current ability to carry out the threat. However, the prosecution must establish that the threat you made is the type that would have caused the defendant to have a reasonable fear.

If you choose to take your case to trial, we offer skilled Phoenix trial lawyers who will aggressively defend your rights in the courtroom. If you do not want to fight your charges at trial, we can negotiate with the prosecution to seek a favorable plea agreement. Depending on the facts of your case, we may be able to help you keep this off of your record. If that is not possible, we can seek a plea to a lesser offense, including a non-strike offense, or we can seek an agreement on sentencing that will limit the penalties you face. With a team of former prosecutors, the skilled attorneys at the Phoenix Offices of Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC are highly adept at finding creative solutions for their clients.

Phoenix Robberies Gone Wrong

Phoenix Robber Uses Snapchat to Lure Victim

The good days of new social media, where you can literally do anything and find anything. Honestly, is there any wonder that crime rates are higher and sex victims are easily found? Nope not really.

Now a Phoenix woman had been lured by a Snapchat friend into an armed robbery. Seriously? How can someone even try to blame that on someone else? Anyways, the robber’s car was later taken after he was stabbed several times.

The Phoenix Police were able to arrest twenty-one year old, Savannah Renee Pierce on March 16th. This was for her involvement in a carjacking that happened on January.

The police report said that Pierce had used Snapchat to make a friend and then convinced him to meet her because she was having financial issues and needed some money.

The man met her and Pierce asked him to drive her to a friends house which was near 39th and Glendale Avenues. They then parked at a local park so that they could wait on her friend’s arrival. As they waited Pierce and the victim started making out in the car. However, a man then banged on the window. Pierced unlocked the door and let the man into the car. When the victim wouldn’t get out of the car the other man stabbed him in the arm four times with a large knife. The male victim then got out of the car and the two suspects fled with the car.

The police luckily found the car pretty quickly, just a few days later. Pierce at first denied knowing the male suspect even though the police showed her they had proof that they had been in a relationship on and off again in the past.

Now Pierce is being charged with aggravated assault and armed robbery.

Bank Robber is Mother of Four in Phoenix

Being a mother is a hard job. Of course you always want the best for your children and always want to give them a better life. Times are hard, but is a life of crime the best answer for that? Probably not.

A mother of four has recently been arrested for a bank robbery and might be linked for another robbery.

The Goodyear police have reported that there was a twenty nine year old woman named Lizette Luna who entered a Wells Fargo Bank which was inside of a Safeway Store. The store was located at 141st Avenue and Indian School Road.

The Police say she was relatively calm about the situation, she gave the teller a note saying, “someone had a gun pointed at the teller and would use it if she didn’t comply”.

According to the reports after she got the money she got into a gold colored Nissan Pathfinder and fled the scene. The police responded to the silent alarm and spotted the Pathfinder which was only a few miles away from the scene. Luckily, they were able to make the arrest.

The bank employees were able to identify Luna as the bank robber. Luna later told the authorities that she had left her four kids with her boyfriend and family members and she was just on her way to a doctor’s appointment.

Seems like she veered a little off course from her doctor’s appointment. The police were able to find a wig and baseball cap in the vehicle which matched the descriptions that the bank employees gave the police.

Phoenix Child Abuse Involving Guns

Phoenix Boy Shot by Two Year Old Brother

I’ll never quite understand how kids can get enough alone time to kill each other. Where were their parents? Why were the guns not locked up? Why did they kids not know that they were dangerous? If they did know they were dangerous why did they feel comfortable enough to go into your room and get the guns. I’m for guns but I’m definitely for striker gun laws. Of course you never know what could happen until your in that situation.

Sadly a nine year old little boy shot and killed by his two year old little brother. The parents of the boys have now been arrested and are both now facing charges for their suspected roles in the incident.

According to the Phoenix police, they were working to confirm the details of the situation. The children’s twenty-eight year old mother, Wendy Lavarnia worked with the investigators.

Phoenix Police Investigate Toddler Being Shot

The Phoenix police confirmed that the nine year old was Landen Lavarnia. He died at the hospital after being on life support since Monday. This was after his two year old little brother shot him in the head.

Lavarnia was booked for investigation of four counts of child abuse. According to the reports her bond was set at $25,000. Her thirty-one year old husband, Kansas Lavarnia reportedly had a felony record. He was arrested for suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm. Police are still investigating, it’s unclear if Kansas was at home at the time of the shooting.

Child Shot

To continue on with that tragic story, Phoenix police arrived to the scene around 3 p.m. that Monday. According to the reports the home was located near 35th and Rosewood avenues. When they got to the scene I’m sure it was something none of them wanted to see, they saw that the older boy was shot once in the head.

Wendy had told the authorities that she had placed the 9mm pistol (unholstered and loaded) onto the master bed, which was next to her two year old and four year old sons. According to Wendy the two year old picked up the gun and then fired it, hitting the nine year in the head as he innocently played his video games just a few feet away.

She also said that the gun didn’t have an “safety” on it. She often let the two year old practice pulling the trigger when the gun was unloaded. Not the safest toy to allow your two year old to play with lady.

Neighbor’s Statement:

It’s tragic… If that happened here, I would die. It would be devastating beyond belief. It’s devastating just having it next door.

The neighbor said that the husband, Kansas was a hard worker that he drove a large crane truck back and forth from Nevada to Arizona. Other neighbors also called him a nice guy.

Neighbors say they never saw the nine year old little boy but would often see the toddler outside in his diaper running around. Which is odd, why wouldn’t all the kids be outside together? Out of all the time of them living there the neighbors never seeing a nine year old kid outside is a bit odd.

Phoenix Manslaughter Lawyer

At the Phoenix based Offices of Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC, we have defended many clients charged with a violent crime, including murder charges and other high-level violent crimes. We can provide the strong defense you need if you have been charged with voluntary manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter.

If you discovered your spouse in bed with a lover and as a result killed your spouse in a sudden rage, you may have been charged with first-degree murder. However, you may only be guilty of voluntary manslaughter, an offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of 11 years, as opposed to a life sentence.

Manslaughter is defined as the unlawful killing of a human being without malice. The term malice is used in a highly technical sense and does not simply imply a feeling of anger.

Types of Manslaughter Defenses

If you have been charged with murder and the evidence is stacked against you to show that you did unlawfully kill another person, seeking a conviction to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter may make a significant difference in your case.

To effectively raise such a defense, you must be able to establish that you were provoked, that a reasonable person in such a situation might be similarly provoked to kill, and that you did not have sufficient time to cool off and further contemplate your actions. If retained as your counsel, we will thoroughly investigate the facts of your case to determine which defense strategy gives you the best opportunity to protect your freedom.

Types of Manslaughter Cases in Phoenix

In the state of Arizona, you may be charged with involuntary manslaughter under two separate circumstances:

  • If you committed a crime (other than a felony) and unintentionally caused the

death of another person.

  • If you were engaged in a lawful act that might cause death and acted without

“due caution and circumspection.”

Manslaughter Conviction and Sentencing

A conviction for involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of four years imprisonment. If you caused the unintentional death of another person and you were not committing a crime, it is not sufficient for the prosecution to allege that you made a mistake. The phrase “without due cause and circumspection” implies something more than a simple mistake. Our Phoenix Attorneys can raise a number of issues and defenses on your behalf to raise the strong defense you need. A plea to a lesser offense or a plea that allows you to avoid a criminal conviction may be possible depending on the facts of your case. If you choose to fight your charges at trial, we have the skilled trial lawyers to aggressively defend your rights in the courtroom.

Child Abuse Cases in Phoenix

Child Abuse in Phoenix

I’m sorry but to me, and to a lot of people child abuse in any form is one of the worst crimes that could ever be committed. A man who was accused of child molestation and continued sexual abuse in now behind bars.

The United States Marshals Service arrested thirty-nine year old, Marian Tigla. They arrested him in Waterloo however, he’s from Phoenix, Arizona.

There are several charges against Tigla which include: child molestation, sexual conduct with a minor and continued sexual abuse. He is now in the Black Hawk County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Arizona.

Hopefully that doesn’t take too long and he gets his sentencing rather fast.

Day Care Employee Arrested for Child Sexual Abuse

When you send your kids to school you trust that the people working at the day care or school is there for trustworthy reasons. That they love children in a non perverted way. However, that’s sadly not how the world works all the time.

Sadly, a former employee at a Gilbert day care has been arrested for allegedly inappropriately touching little girls.

The police say that twenty-four year old, Tanner Anthony Lang is going to face two charges of felony child abuse.

According to the reports, the alleged incidents happened at the Children’s Learning Adventure Center which is in Gilbert. Lang had been working there as a trusted teacher. Police say that it happened at an after school program, in a course of a year between September 2015 and May 2016.

According to one of the mothers, her daughter was a six year old little girl and she told her about what happened.

The innocent little girl told the police that the man had “put his hand down the back of her pants and touched her buttocks with his hand”. How sickening to hear. As a parent, I can’t imagine the pain the mother feels for her child. The rage she also feels.

There was also a second victim that also came forward, that also reported something similar during the same time frame.

Of course the police questioned Lang, he admitted to knowing the girls but did not confirm nor deny the accusations.

Children’s Learning Adventure issued this statement regarding the incident:

Children’s Learning Adventure has learned of the arrest of a former staff member for two counts of aggravated assault by an adult on a minor. This former staff member was placed on leave as soon as the allegations were brought to our attention and was subsequently terminated once we learned of his arrest.

Children’s Learning Adventure cooperated with the Gilbert Police Department in its investigation of this matter and will continue to do so. As this investigation is ongoing we are not privy to details regarding actions that led to the charges. As Children’s Learning Adventure believes that open communication and transparency is essential, we will communicate directly with our families when additional information becomes available. In the meantime, center and corporate management are available to discuss this situation with any parent who may have questions or concerns.

At Children’s Learning Adventure providing a safe and nurturing environment in which children can learn and grow is our utmost priority. All teachers and staff have undergone careful employment screening including criminal background and CPS registry checks. Closed circuit camera systems and open classrooms with glass walls provide for ongoing observation of classroom activities.

Center and corporate management will continue to be hyper-vigilant and engaged to insure the safety and well being of the children in our center. Creating a caring environment in which children develop a life-long love of learning continues to be our mission and we are committed to taking all actions necessary to insure we meet this objective.

Ohio Woman Arrested for Child Stabbing

A Ohio woman admitted to fatally stabbing her five month old son. She claimed she was “possessed and not in control of her actions”. Right.  Why even have kids if you’re just going to do that? Well now she’s going to face a first degree murder charge.

She’s only twenty-nine years old and her name is Andrea Portillo. At first she was being held on suspicion of a second degree murder and child abuse for the death of her infant son, however “mental illness” played a role in the crime.

I don’t think that people should be allowed to kill people and then get to claim, ” oh, they were crazy” then get a lesser sentence. Sometimes, yes! But in cases like this, probably not. She was relatively young and probably just tired of being a mom.

Arizona Working on Family Dispute Crisis

Family Dispute Ends Deadly

Family fights can sometimes get pretty heated, sure everyone threatens to stop talking to that one person in their family occasionally but you never mean it. However, one family took “family dispute” to a whole nother level.

According to the Coolidge police, a shooting involving the deaths of three different people along a rural road seems to be a case of a murder-suicide.

The police day that seventy-five year old, Francisco Renteria Valenzuela as well as married couple, Reyna Idalia Renteria (forty-five years old) and Everardo Verduzco ( fifty-seven years old) were all found dead on Wednesday. Apparently they had all suffered from gunshot wounds and there was a pistol found by Verduzco. Verduzco was married to Rayna Renteria.

Coolidge Police Sgt. Mark Tercero said that when he interviewed the family members of the victims that the evidence lead to a possible marital dispute between the group.

Sgt. Mark Tercero’s Statement:

They were going through some marital issues. She recently broke off the relationship, which I believe led up to the incident. I believe this is somewhat of a murder-suicide. I can’t commit to that yet, because I don’t have the ballistics test back that will provide more information. But we still do not believe there are any outstanding suspects.

Which makes since given the situation.

The highly skilled Attorneys at Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC advise and represent people facing criminal charges for domestic violence often described as Spousal Abuse, Spousal Battery or Domestic Dispute, such charges do not always reflect a case between married people, but include those living in the same location (cohabitation), or sometimes just engaged in a domestic (dating) relationship.  Such cases can also lead to violation of a restraining order or protective orders.  They are NOT the same as a Domestic Violence Restraining Order however.
