Martial Dispute With Extreme Results

Phoenix Woman Arrested for Husbands Death

Being married fights are bound to happen. Does that mean it gives you an okay to shoot your spouse? Probably not. Amanda Lynn Miller is now facing twelve years in prison due to shooting her husband which resulted in his death.

Amanda at first, pled guilty to 2nd degree murder after she shot and killed her spouse. The husband was thirty-six year old, Jesus Nevarez-Galindo.

According to the reports, Amanda had told the police that her husband started a fire in the kitchen before she shot him. When the police arrived to the scene he was already dead.

The investigating police said that there had been a history of domestic violence between Amanda and her husband. The investigators found out that they had been arguing over “financial difficulties” just before the shooting.

Divorce Due to Spouse Abuse

When a marriage is so toxic that you have to put tracking devices on the other person’s vehicle, it’s probably time to get away from the marriage.

Celebrities are no different when it comes to martial disputes. Jason Kidd is a point guard for The Nets is struggling with spousal abuse of his own. According to Kidd his wife, Joumana kicked and punched him and put tracking devices on his vehicles, computers and even taunted him during his games. Due to this extreme behavior he has filed for divorce.

This isn’t something new though, since 2001 the Kidds’ couple has had multiple reports of spousal abuse. Joumana Kid had someone call 911 while Kidd had played for the Phoenix Suns. Why did she call the police? She claims that he had punched her in the face because she didn’t want him eating their son’s French fries.

Things aren’t calming down in the situation though, now Joumana Kidd is filing a lawsuit against her husband. She is claiming there has been “years of spousal abuse” and infidelity. There is a twenty-seven page lawsuit that describes Jason Kidd as a crazy “S.O.B.”.  She also claims that Kidd often beat her, smashed her head against the middle console of their vehicle, threw objects at her, and would frequently go days without talking to her while he was on the road.

Spousal Abuse

Joumana said that she tried to work through their troubles since in 2004 Kidd said he “recommitted” himself to Christianity. Then one time he said that he had a “chemical imbalance” which would cause the issues. Of course things didn’t get any better. According to Joumana there was constant drinking, cheating with strippers and other women, there was also gambling. He would use buying her jewelry to apologize for his horrible behavior.

The local news actually has a map of where Kidd allegedly fool around behind her back.

Friend of Joumana Statement:

She isvery focused. She’s trying to spend as much time with her kids as possible. She’s doing fine. She didn’t want a measure of payback. She tried to have the record sealed.

There are rumors that the Nets are going to trade Kidd before the deadline. Kidd went to Las Vegas for the NBA All Star Game however, he was injured so he couldn’t play.

Phoenix Domestic Violence Cases

Phoenix Woman Pleads Guilty to Murder

You know, every couple fights. Sure, everyone feels like they could “shoot” their spouse but no one actually does it. Except for maybe one Phoenix woman. She pleaded guilty to second degree murder. She fatally shot her husband in their home.

Thirty-one year old, Amanda Lynn Miller told the Phoenix Police that she shot her thirty-six year old husband, Jesus Nevarez-Galindo. She was trying to leave their home as it was filling up with smoke from a fire. He had set the kitchen on fire.

Court documents showed that police counted seven wounds in the man’s body. Miller told the police that the situation began as an argument over financial issues and lack of food in the house broke out. Sure makes sense. Hungry. Let’s catch the kitchen on fire.

Apparently the couple had quite the history of domestic violence.

Woman Suffers From Sexual Abuse

A young woman of only eighteen years old has suffered from serious injures as she was beaten, burned, and sexually assaulted and forced to drink bleach. This was after she reportedly refused to sell drugs for a man.

Twenty-five year old, Johnel Henry Thomas has now been booked into jail for one count of each sexual assault as well as kidnapping, unlawful means of transportation, as well as six counts of aggravated assault.

The court documents stated that the victim was taken to Mr. Thomas’ apartment in West Phoenix. She was taken there by another female and possible suspect.

After she was in his apartment, Mr. Thomas allegedly beat her as well as tortured the poor young girl. She recieved a broken arm, smashed hands, burns all over her body from a hot knife and swords, burns from the bleach being poured over her as well as bruises all over her body from hammer blows.  This poor girl, I can’t imagine what she suffered.

Violence Reported

The report also said that the police had stated that the victim had still had a belt around her neck when she was found by the police officers. There were also marks on her neck, ankles and wrists from her being restrained. She was also sexually assaulted, which also caused even more injuries.

Luckily a neighbor saw Mr. Thomas and another man dragging the eighteen year old girl into the suspect’s apartment and heard her please for help. The neighbor called 911.

When the officers had arrived to the scene the front and back doors were open to the apartment. Thomas was later located by the police in a stolen vehicle.

According to the report, when Thomas had seen the officers, he fled the scene, naked and out the back door. The victim was also naked as she walked from the back door. She was walking to the front of the complex to find the officers for help.

Domestic Abuse

Police said that she was understandably hysterical. She was telling them about the suspect pouring bleach on her and making her drink it. Officers were able to pour some water on the young woman and tried to get the bleach out of her eyes and off of her body.

The victim was later taken to the hospital for treatment. She told the medical staff that she had been sexually assaulted and the staff has confirmed that her injures match what she said.

As the police searched the apartment, they found a number of knives as well as swords and empty bleach bottle as well as two hammers.

When Mr. Thomas was interviewed by the investigators, he had told them that a female friend had “assaulted the victim inside the apartment” . However, he did admit to “having sex” with the victim. Another man was also taken into custody. He had told the investigators that he was in the apartment during some of the assault, however after his arrest he denied participating.

Police have said that the victim had severe burns. She even had to have surgery for her broken arm.

Spousal Abuse Cases

Native American Spousal Abuse

Native American Spousal Abuse sadly isn’t uncommon. Kayla White was only twelve years old when her life changed forever. On January 2, 2009 her mother was killed by her father. This incident made her a victim of domestic violence.

Kayla’s Statement:

That’s when I heard my uncle say, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to tell Kayla your mom didn’t make it. That was the moment I found out my mother had passed on.

How tragic would that be? Now Kayla is twenty-two years old and a Navajo Nation member. When she was growing up she never realized there were so many signs of domestic violence right in front of her at her own home. Her older siblings told her that her father had always been mentally and verbally abusive towards their mother.

One in four women and one in seven men have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. According to the ACESDV Native American women experience domestic violence at rates of 50% higher than the national average.

Kayla’s Statement:

Even just looking at my mom’s life insurance, the way she had things set up for my siblings and I, she knew something was going to happen to her.

Kayla said that her mother had even tried to file for divorce before but her father wouldn’t let her mother leave.

Spouse Domestic Violence

Native American reservations are said to have high rates of domestic violence. People think that that is mainly due to the lack of awareness.

Caroline Felicity Atone grew up in Southern Arizona as a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Antone’s Statement:

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as domestic violence.

Antone said that she left the reservation when she was 14 years old due to the fact that she was abused when she was at home. She eventually cam back and is working as a counselor there now.

It  took a while for her to return home, she went to treatment and began to cope with her abuse in a healthy way.

Antone’s Statement:

Since our tribal members don’t know about counseling in general, it’s very difficult to get them into counseling. The shame, the hurt, the destruction of their souls, some of them, they feel it’s their fault.

Hopefully the exposure gains some awareness in the Native American culture and helps lower the domestic abuse numbers.

Woman Kills Her Husband During Spouse Abuse Case

There’s some pretty morbid things in the world, one of the most recent is when a Phoenix woman shot and killed her husband in their living room then smoked cigarette while he laid dying.

A few months ago Rebekah Mellon pleaded guilty to second degree murder and is set to be sentenced. The thirty-six year old woman is facing 18 to 22 years in prison after accepting a plea deal from prosecutors.

By taking the plea deal Rebekah will be avoiding a lengthy trial on a first degree murder charge that would probably have resulted in a life sentence for the 2012 killing. The killing was actually captured by surveillance cameras in the home.

According to reports a trial would have showed that there were several incidents that proved that they had a volatile marriage. Court documents say argue that Rebekah was acting in self defense against Donald Mellon. Apparently previous acts of domestic violence made her often fear for her life.

Mellon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Phoenix Domestic Abuse

New App to Help with Domestic Abuse

Domestic violence is clearly not going to just stop, so the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence have started the fight to help those who are being abused.

Dr. Jill Messing is a ASU associate professor and works in the School of Social Work. She’s worked hard to help create a  new tool for women of domestic violence, an app.

Dr. Messing’s Statement:

Women who have easy access to their phones, it’s really important that they can provide them with safety information.

The app is being called “myPlan.” myPlan is aiming to help guide women to get the help that they need and even help them by connecting them with the national abuse networks that will ultimately get them in contact with local help.

If they want to, women can provide a profile and then fill out a survey to find out if they are in an abusive relationship.

Dr. Messing’s Statement:

myPlan provides them with information about relationships, red flags, it provides educational information.

The app can be used free of charge and advertising. It’s a tool to help women who feel they are stuck and have no way out of an abusive relationship, but want the help.

Dr. Messing’s Statement:

It allows them a safe, private and confidential space to think about their values within their relationship and provide them with the safety information on safety planning.

I’m sure this is going to be a very helpful tool for scared women who feel like they are alone. If you might be facing abuse issues then please download the app and get the help that you deserve.

Phoenix Spousal and Child Abuse

Police Lt. Suspended After Domestic Abuse Charges

Any kind of abuse is very hard on whoever is the victim. No one deserves to be abused whether it’s physical or verbal abuse, none of it is okay.

A Phoenix police lieutenant is not above the law. He is now suspended from his post after being accused of not reporting an domestic violence incident. Why would he do that? Well the charges would have been against his former subordinates.

Last fall, Sgt. Leroy Potter’s girlfriend approached Lt. Brian Thatcher and told him about an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred between the couple.

Thatcher did not launch an internal investigation in a timely matter and has since been placed on a 120-hour suspension without pay.

During an investigation into the alleged domestic violence-related incident, Potter was placed in a non-enforcement position but the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office declined to file charges against him on Wednesday.

No additional information was released about Thatcher’s suspension or the alleged domestic violence.

Potter has since retired from the Phoenix Police Department.

Phoenix Officer Arrested for Domestic Violence

A Phoenix police officer arrested for domestic violence two years ago is in trouble again — and this time it is costing him his job.

Nevin Brenner retired Friday, in lieu of being fired, after failing a drug test. Sources say Brenner claims his ex-girlfriend secretly fed him drugs while they were in Mexico. That same girlfriend accused him of domestic violence in 2014 while the couple was in Sedona.

Brenner was arrested and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. He received a 24-hour suspension after an internal investigation. He then returned to work but was moved out of the domestic violence unit in which he was assigned.

Brenner, of Litchfield Park, was accused of shoving his then-girlfriend out the door of the Olde Sedona Bar & Grille and then forcefully pulling her by her arm out to the parking lot, according to Sedona Police Cmdr. Marlayne Hatler.

Police said Brenner was yelling at her and cursing before they got into a vehicle and left.

Officers located a vehicle matching the description at a local hotel.

The latest investigation occurred a few months shy of Brenner’s 20-year anniversary with the department. To be retirement eligible, Brenner had to buy back prior military time to reach the 20-year mark.

Brenner is not under criminal investigation for the incident that forced him into retirement.

Arizona Working on Family Dispute Crisis

Family Dispute Ends Deadly

Family fights can sometimes get pretty heated, sure everyone threatens to stop talking to that one person in their family occasionally but you never mean it. However, one family took “family dispute” to a whole nother level.

According to the Coolidge police, a shooting involving the deaths of three different people along a rural road seems to be a case of a murder-suicide.

The police day that seventy-five year old, Francisco Renteria Valenzuela as well as married couple, Reyna Idalia Renteria (forty-five years old) and Everardo Verduzco ( fifty-seven years old) were all found dead on Wednesday. Apparently they had all suffered from gunshot wounds and there was a pistol found by Verduzco. Verduzco was married to Rayna Renteria.

Coolidge Police Sgt. Mark Tercero said that when he interviewed the family members of the victims that the evidence lead to a possible marital dispute between the group.

Sgt. Mark Tercero’s Statement:

They were going through some marital issues. She recently broke off the relationship, which I believe led up to the incident. I believe this is somewhat of a murder-suicide. I can’t commit to that yet, because I don’t have the ballistics test back that will provide more information. But we still do not believe there are any outstanding suspects.

Which makes since given the situation.
