Officer Involved Shooting

Phoenix Officer Involved in Shooting

Phoenix police have identified a 44-year-old man killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday as Jose Aaron Gonzalez.

According to police, at 6:30 a.m. officers were called to a home near 31st Avenue and Roosevelt Street to serve a search warrant for the Arizona Department of Transportation regarding an investigation into identity theft and forgery.

Officers reportedly made contact with a woman and three children inside the home, who exited the residence without incident.

Police say they then saw Gonzalez flee down the hallway where he hid in a back room, where he stayed inside a closet armed with a handgun.

As officers were still outside the home, Gonzalez reportedly left his hiding location and confronted officers, pointing a gun at them from the hallway.

Police say three officers then shot Gonzalez, ending the threat. He was pronounced dead at the scene

No additional suspects were located.

Police say they will be conducting standard criminal and internal inquiries into the shooting and ADOT will be continuing their investigation as well.

Suspect Killed In Officer Involved Shooting

A man died following a shooting involving two police officers in west Phoenix.

Police were called to the area of 59th Avenue and Thomas Road around 1:15 p.m. Friday after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident between 27-year-old David Gardea and a woman.

Police say Gardea pointed a gun at officers after they arrived and exited their vehicle.

One of the officers, fired his weapon at Gardea as he fled up a driveway on Mulberry Drive. Police say he turned and fired his weapon at the officers, forcing them to fire back. Gardea was shot and died at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident, authorities said. Detectives recovered a semi-automatic handgun at the scene.

The officers have since been identified as 38-year-old Nicholas Chacon and 24-year-old Anthony Deida. Chacon has 17 years of service under his belt, while Deida has 10 years.

The shooting comes just two days after officers were involved in a shooting with an alleged carjacking suspect in the area of 33rd Avenue and Washington Street.

Police Investigate Shooting

A dangerous scene unfolded in a Glendale neighborhood after shots were fired and a police officer was injured.

This happened on Friday morning near 43rd Avenue and Olive.

Sgt. Tiffany Smith with Glendale Police says a multi-agency task force was attempting to arrest a violent suspect with multiple felony warrants. As they encountered that suspect, the individual fired shots and a Glendale police sergeant was struck.

The male suspect then fled the area on foot into the neighborhood. Police established a perimeter and sent tactical officers from different agencies.

The Glendale Police sergeant who was shot was part of a taskforce that had been watching and tracking the 44-year-old suspect, who officers tried to arrest at a parking lot. He is described as a senior sergeant with 20 years of service with Glendale Police.

Sgt. Smith’s Statement:

At that time, the suspect fled on foot, and the officers pursued on foot. That’s when the suspect engaged the officers and shot the sergeant.

The suspect ran into a neighborhood. Residents in the neighborhood were told to stay indoors, while officers from several agencies combed through yards, peered over backyard fences, as they looked for the suspect.

After nearly an hour, Phoenix SWAT team members cornered the suspect at a home’s side yard. Phoenix Police said the suspect fired at officers first, and SWAT team members returned fire.

Analyse Sanchez Statement:

And then we heard shootings, and it went on for a little bit. It was like boom boom boom. It was very loud.

The suspect was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have identified a man who was shot and killed Wednesday by an officer with the Surprise Police Department as 61-year-old George M. Pappas.

Pappas was said to be holding a knife at a business on Bell and El Mirage roads when he was shot and killed.

Officer Shooting

Officers were initially called to the business to perform a welfare check, according to a Surprise police spokesman, but he did not offer additional details about the events that led to the shooting.

Pappas was the second person shot by a police officer in the Valley on Wednesday. Phoenix police shot and injured a man suspected of arson earlier that day.

Diana Greene, owner of Molly and Friend’s pet grooming, said that she had just moved her business into the complex. She described hearing a loud bang before noon.

Diana Greene’s Statement:

We had seen two police officers run up to the open office back there, it’s a rental office, and (we) heard a gunshot.

Greene’s Statement:

Immediately the police came walking back down and then they went back up with two stretchers and came back down with two empty stretchers, and then the coroner’s van pulled in.

Pappas died at the scene.

Law-enforcement officers have shot 21 people, killing 12 of them, so far in 2018.

Investigating Homicide Cases

Police Still Searching for Homicide Suspects

Even though it’s been more than a year since a security guard has lost his life due to being shot and killed, police are still trying to find justice for the fallen security guard’s death. The security guard had been killed outside of an West Phoenix apartment complex. Police are still needing helping identifying two suspects.

The Phoenix Police officers found fifty-nine year old, Jeffery Bellemare, suffering from gunshot wounds. This was on November 29, 2013 at the Graybriar Condominiums. This is near the 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road. Sadly, Bellemare died at the scene.

Police Searching for Two Suspects in Security Guard’s Shooting

According to the police, there was a man and a woman that could be seen running from the area. They fled into an older model sedan vehicle. Police have released sketches of what the two suspects might look like. They hope that someone in the public would be willing to come forth if they know these people, or someone might have seen them around, just anything to go on really.

Police say that the vehicle had a vinyl top and could have been damaged in the front-end due to a front end incident that was prior to the shooting. The Phoenix Police said that the detectives have been working on this case for quite some time. It must be awful hard on these officers, not having much to go on.

If anyone has any information about the shooting or could possibly identify the two suspects, please do so. You can contact the Silent Witness program at 480-WITNESS or even the Phoenix Police Department.  If that was a friend of yours or a loved one, you would want justice. The fallen security guard’s family definitely deserves some justice and peace of mind over this. So, please help if you can.

Wrong Way Crash Ends Up in Homicide Case

Authorities say a Utah man has been arrested in connection with a wrong-way crash in western Arizona that killed three California women in another vehicle.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say 49-year-old Dana Michael Cavanaugh of Washington, Utah, has been booked into jail on suspicion of homicide.

They’re still trying to determine if Cavanaugh was driving impaired at the time of Saturday’s crash on Interstate 10 east of Quartzsite.

It was unclear Monday if Cavanaugh has an attorney yet.

DPS officials say a vehicle entered the interstate going the wrong way and traveled about 500 feet before colliding head-on with another car.

A 55-year-old woman and two 31-year-old women were killed.

They are identified as: Caitlin M. Cascella, 31; Christine A. Bradbury, 31; and Susan C. Bradbury, 55 all from Riverside, Calif.

Mother Faces Homicide Charges

The mother of two children found dead inside a car in Superior has been arrested on homicide charges, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office says.

PCSO says a 2-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl were found strapped to car seats inside a car Monday night near U.S. 60 and Mary Drive.

Both of the children are dead.

The children’s mother, 20-year-old Brittany Velasquez, faces two counts of murder, according to the sheriff’s office.

PCSO’s Statement:

Evidence on scene indicated foul play.

Officials from the Superior Police Department said officers had been out to Velasquez’s home seven or eight times throughout the past few years, including a January incident that was reported to the Department of Child Safety.

DCS confirmed that it had two prior reports of neglect involving Velasquez and her children: In January and in October 2016. Neither instance resulted in action from DCS, which concluded there was no evidence of abuse or neglect despite having concerns about Velasquez’s mental health.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating.

Prison Homicide

A Tucson-area man serving a 22-year sentence for a double murder has died in state prison in what authorities say is a suspected homicide.

Charlie M. Wooden, 34, was found unresponsive in his assigned bunk Monday night at a medium security state prison complex in Buckeye, authorities said. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Arizona Department of Corrections investigators “suspect foul play was involved and have identified potential suspects,” the department said in a news release Tuesday.

Arizona Department Statement:

While the investigation is ongoing, the department intends to fully pursue criminal prosecution in this case.

Wooden was sentenced to prison in 2017 for two counts of second-degree murder in the 2013 deaths of Vanessa Buster, 22, and Pluma-Blanca Jose manual Navarro Cazares, 23.

The victims were residents of Three Points west of Tucson. Wooden also was known to have lived in the Three Points area, and well as in the Drexel Heights area, according to Star archives.

Homicide Suspect

Two Flagstaff men were arrested Thursday after a woman was shot and killed Wednesday night in east Flagstaff, Flagstaff Police Department officials said.

Kinsey Beebe, 19, was found shot and in critical condition Wednesday night when officers responded to a call about shots fired near the 1900 block of east Arrowhead Avenue at approximately 11:30 p.m., Flagstaff Police spokesman Sgt. Cory Runge said in a press release.

Beebe was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.

Approximately half an hour after Beebe was found shot, police receive another call of shots fired in the area of North Sanford Place and North Miranda Way, Runge said. Police determined it had been a drive-by shooting at an occupied residential structure, but no one was injured.

First Degree Murder

At 2 a.m. Thursday, Adonis Encinas Velarde, 20, turned himself in and was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, kidnapping, disorderly conduct with a weapon, discharging a weapon in city limits, drive-by shooting of an occupied structure, and assisting a criminal street gang, Runge said.

Velarde told police he witnessed the murder of Beebe and was the person who fired the gun in the drive-by shooting, Runge said.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Abraham Puentes Ortiz, 22, was found and arrested at the 700 block of South Blackbird Roost. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, kidnapping, disorderly conduct with a weapon, discharging a weapon in city limits, drive-by shooting of an occupied structure, and assisting a criminal street gang, Runge said.

Ortiz told police he shot Beebe three times and drove the vehicle in the drive-by shooting, Runge said.

Police Investigate Homicide

The men allegedly told police they had been drinking with Beebe at the 1900 block of east Arrowhead Avenue. During their time there, the men went outside and fired one shot from an altered Ruger handgun with the serial number removed, Runge said.

Beebe confronted the men about the shooting because there were other people inside the house. The men then placed the gun inside the home and went for a walk. When they returned, they found out Beebe had hidden the gun. The three got in an argument and Beebe made a phone call, Runge said.

Ortiz, who was armed with a Glock handgun, shot Beebe in the head and neck three times, Runge said.

The men fled the scene in a minivan, which had an AR-15 rifle inside, Runge said. Velarde fired a gun at an occupied structure during the drive away from where Beebe was murdered.

Velarde then fled from Ortiz because he believed Ortiz would kill him next, Runge said. Velarde then surrendered himself to police.

When police located Ortiz, he was armed with a Glock handgun and police located an AR-15 in his residence.

Police believe they have arrested all suspects in the case and there is no ongoing threat to the public, Runge said.

Different Types of Shootings in Phoenix

Many Different Things Contribute to A Phoenix Shooting

Road rage is something that people joke about, but you never know what could happen. Of course, I’ve even joked about having “road rage” but after this latest news article I won’t be joking around about it any more.

According to the Department of Public Safety, they have made an arrest that deals with a road rage shooting. The shooting happened around the Loop 101 on a Saturday.

Thirty-six year old, Christopher Hoffman had admitted to his involvement of the shooting that happened on a Saturday morning near Bell Road.

The Department of Public Safety “DPS” says that witnesses and citizens were able to help them locate Hoffman. Hoffman was booked into jail for a drive by shooting, aggravated assault, discharging a firearm in city limits as well as being in possession of a dangerous drug.

The Department of Public Safety said in a media conference that they do not think that this drive by shooting was connect to the ongoing freeway shootings investigation.

Apartment Complex Shooting in Phoenix

Another type of shooting is at a residential home or apartment complex’s. Home shootings are sadly pretty common. The Phoenix Police said that they were able to identify a woman who had been shot and sadly died in Phoenix on a Friday.

According to the reports, thirty-one year old, Latangla Lawrence had suffered from several gunshot wounds inside of an apartment complex which was located near the I-17 and Thomas Road. The police have reported that the thirty-one year old woman had been shot in the face.

There were witnesses to the shooting, and according to the reports by them, Lawrence was seen leaving the apartment after shots had been fired. She then fell to the ground.

A man was found not far from the scene with a gunshot wound, he was then taken to the hospital where he remains for now. The police have said that there were also two children found inside of the apartment. They children have been taken to the Department of Child Safety to keep them safe.

The shooting is still under investigation at this time.

Could have been a domestic fight? Domestic disputes are known to get a little crazy sometimes, but would it really get so bad to shoot each other? Plus, the children in there…I doubt any kind of parent would shoot at each other in front of the kids. Maybe a drug deal gone bad? Who knows? The police are working hard to get to the bottom of it.

Public Shooting Turns into a Homicide

Another type of shooting is sadly a public place shooting. These are pretty common days. Shootings often turn into homicides, because let’s face it, if you’re planning on shooting someone chances are you’re not shooting at them to tickle them. You’re wanting to hurt them badly, or probably kill them.

A search started for a man who was wanted for a 2014 shooting in a San Diego homicide. The man was later arrested in Phoenix just a couple weeks ago. The police was given a tip about the suspect, and luckily it lead the authorities to the Valley where the found him.

Twenty-six year old Neil Downey as well as another man had allegedly shot a victim outside of a hookah lounge in November of 2014 in San Diego. The first suspect was found a little quicker, in April of this year. However, Downey remained at large and on the run until a Thursday.

Downey is no angel, the brutal man has an extensive history of violence on children as well as police. This, coming from the U.S. Marshals, who are pretty good with their intel.

Since August the United States Marshals have been looking into every tip they’ve recieved about Downey. They got many saying that Downey could be hiding in Phoenix or the Mesa area. They were able to finally track him down as he was leaving a home in the area of 21st and Turney. Must have been some pretty good tips.

David Gonzales, U.S. Marshal for District of Arizona’s Statement:

The level of interagency cooperation exhibited during this investigation was second to none. This collaborative effort resulted in the capture of a violent fugitive and made the Valley a safer place.

Downey is now in jail and is awaiting for extradition to San Diego. He’s being held at the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail. He’s probably not in a hurry to be heading back to San Diego though.

Deadly Phoenix Shootings

Phoenix Shootings End Deadly

Now crime continues to grow in Phoenix and other border areas. People are scare they might be deported. The ones that aren’t scared are running illegal deals or scams across the border.

According to the Phoenix police, a twenty-two year old man is now dead. A woman is in pretty critical condition after a shooting in West Phoenix.

Police were able to detain two people from inside of a home where the shooting happened. It happened near 55th and Clarendon avenues, according to Phoenix Police spokesman, Officer James Holmes. It so sad you can’t even be home anymore without being involved in a shooting.

Police are unsure of what the man and woman might have been involved in the shooting. Holmes said that the homicide investigation is now ongoing.

Police had received a call around 4:30 in the morning about an assault at the home. There was a gunfire that broke out just as officers were heading to the scene. The officers got to the scene and found a twenty-two year old man and a woman in her twenties. They were both suffering from gunshot wounds. The man died at the scene of the incident and the woman was taken to a local hospital for being in critical condition.

Phoenix Shooting Ends Deadly for Husband and Wife

According to Officer Holmes, the man and woman was actually husband and wife.

The investigators say that the woman had been at the house when a fight started. She called her husband for him to pick her up. However, a second fight started outside of the home. When the husband arrived with two children, ages three and five there were gunshots fired. The husband and wife were both hit.

The children have been removed from the area and are both luckily safe.

Hopefully officers can find the cause of this incident and get the shooting rates down. I know they work hard to keep people safe, but Phoenix residents are scared. More and more people are arming themselves. Whether it be for self defense or to wreak havoc.

Thankfully the kids weren’t injured in this horrible incident. It’s one thing for fights to happen, but when innocent kids get involved it’s a whole other situation.

We are prepared to do so and have worked with expert witnesses in the past to provide a vigorous defense on our clients’ behalf.

In addition to fighting your charges at trial (or seeking a case dismissal for lack of probable cause), we can also negotiate with the prosecution to seek a favorable plea agreement. A plea agreement might involve a plea to a lesser offense or an agreement on sentencing that will significantly reduce the penalties you face.

Homicide Defense Strategy

We will take the time to talk to witnesses, investigate what really happened in your case, understand what evidence is in the prosecution’s possession, look for holes in the prosecution’s case, and determine if the police violated your constitutional rights or made other critical errors that can be used to your advantage.

We are committed to raising a strong and comprehensive defense on your behalf. Depending on the facts of your case, the following defenses and strategies may be helpful:

  • Self-Defense
  • Insanity

Phoenix Shooting Homicide Cases

Father Tries to Kills Son in Shooting Incident

Phoenix Police are constantly busy with shooting cases. This time one happened near 52nd Street and Bell Road.

The reports say that the police said that the dispute happened between a father and his adult son. How sad is that? Police say that the eighty-one year old father, Michael Zukoski  sadly shot his own son in the back and then shot himself.

According to reports, the officers arrived on the scene of the heartbreaking scene at around 7:35 a.m. that is when they found the son, a forty-nine year old male who had been wounded with a gunshot wound. They were able to get him to the hospital, where is still in serious condition.

The father, Zukoski, was also found at the scene by officers. He was found with an apparent “self-inflicted” gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family Killed in Shooting Incident

When you think of family you usually think of happy, loving togetherness. However, that’s not always the case. Sadly, one family got the surprise that no one would ever want.

Five family members are sadly dead after the son, opened fire at their house. The house was located near 51st Avenue and Cactus Road. According to the Phoenix Police, the son was killed by officers.

Police said that a man and woman were sadly found already dead at the scene. There were also two girls found. One in her teens and then a six year old little girl. The six year old had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. Luckily both girls were expected to make a recovery.

According to the reports, the police had to fatally shoot the shooter after a confrontation inside of the home.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump said that the man and woman who died were the shooter’s parents, Vic and Kimberly Buckner. The girls were Kaitlin and Emma. The shooter was later identified as twenty-six year old, Alex Buckner.

At first Crump said that the shooter had killed himself but later confirmed that the shooter was actually killed by the police officers.

Crump’s Statement:

I’m not sure if it was an exchange of fire, but that ended the confrontation.

The neighbors had to be interviewed by the local police after the shootings were reported and hearing an argument just thirty minutes before the police were called to the house.

One of the people that were injured were one of the ones who called 911 just before 5 a.m. The caller said that a family member was firing at the other family members.

Phoenix Domestic Abuse

New App to Help with Domestic Abuse

Domestic violence is clearly not going to just stop, so the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence have started the fight to help those who are being abused.

Dr. Jill Messing is a ASU associate professor and works in the School of Social Work. She’s worked hard to help create a  new tool for women of domestic violence, an app.

Dr. Messing’s Statement:

Women who have easy access to their phones, it’s really important that they can provide them with safety information.

The app is being called “myPlan.” myPlan is aiming to help guide women to get the help that they need and even help them by connecting them with the national abuse networks that will ultimately get them in contact with local help.

If they want to, women can provide a profile and then fill out a survey to find out if they are in an abusive relationship.

Dr. Messing’s Statement:

myPlan provides them with information about relationships, red flags, it provides educational information.

The app can be used free of charge and advertising. It’s a tool to help women who feel they are stuck and have no way out of an abusive relationship, but want the help.

Dr. Messing’s Statement:

It allows them a safe, private and confidential space to think about their values within their relationship and provide them with the safety information on safety planning.

I’m sure this is going to be a very helpful tool for scared women who feel like they are alone. If you might be facing abuse issues then please download the app and get the help that you deserve.

Criminal Defense Cases

The highly skilled Attorneys at Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC advise and represent people facing criminal charges for domestic violence often described as Spousal Abuse, Spousal Battery or Domestic Dispute, such charges do not always reflect a case between married people, but include those living in the same location (cohabitation), or sometimes just engaged in a domestic (dating) relationship.  Such cases can also lead to violation of a restraining order or protective orders.  They are NOT the same as a Domestic Violence Restraining Order however.

With a team of former prosecutors, Phoenix based Criminal Defense Attorneys at Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC offer a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system. They understand the necessary steps to take in developing an aggressive defense strategy focused on securing a dismissal or minimizing any potential penalties associated with a conviction.

Domestic Violence cases have become extremely political and are regularly treated as “guilty until proven innocent.”   Even with minor cases, that do not involve a documented injury, proactive and rapid action by a caring defense attorney may be they key to not only avoiding a damaging no contact order, but may play a significant role in custody issues and an eventual resolution in the case that does not result in a life-time ban on the possession of firearms, tragic orders separating you from your family and other consequences that can interfere with work, school and life.

At the Law Offices of Criminal Defense Lawyers PLLC, we are committed to helping you achieve a resolution to your immediate problems, while seeking opportunities to improve the troubled family dynamics that might be underlying factors.

In domestic violence cases, the district attorney and the judge will be especially interested in what you’re willing to do to improve relationships, conflict resolution skills, and anger management. Your demonstration toward positive change will often make the difference in the outcome of your case. We work closely with people charged with domestic assault or battery to obtain a dismissal, diversion to community treatment or deferred entry of judgment prior to eventually achieving a dismissal.

Phoenix Domestic Violence Lawyer

Our creative approach to difficult criminal defense problems can help you avoid the consequences of a conviction in situations such as the following scenarios:

  • Violence or assault between spouses, unmarried parents, or cohabiting adults
  • Elder Abuse
  • Child Abuse, Cruelty to a Child, or Child Endangerment
  • Restraining Order Violations
  • Criminal Threats
  • Harassment or Stalking
